Helping People Restore Ecosystems
Poverty stricken communities around the globe are faced with the imminent threats of fuel, shelter and water scarcity, undermining human security. Directly dependent on their surrounding ecosystems to meet their health, livelihoods and food security needs, the ongoing decline in global forest cover exacerbates the pre-existing challenges faced by the rural poor.
Forests without Borders is a registered charity in Canada established by members of the Canadian Institute of Forestry. Understanding the syngergies between proper forestry practices and sustainable development, Forests without Borders works independently or with existing non-government organizations to protect, conserve and restore forested lands, and to educate the public about the importance of healthy forested ecosystems nationally and internationally.
In our overseas projects, communities are given the skills and tools to both enhance forestry practice and realize the benefits accrued from forest ecosystems. While maintaining healthy forests is on the forefront for these projects, actively enhancing biological diversity and ecosystem functioning has the capacity to subsequently catalyze social and economic benefits.
Knowledge is power! By educating teachers, students and the public at large, communities become empowered. Forests withouts Borders is therefore creating opportunities for the present, and fostering strong, empowered communities for the future, enhancing the capacity for long-term sustainable development.
