Forests without Borders has joined together with TEAM Nepal in Talamarang, Sindhupalchock to implement a new tree nursery project site.
This Nursery Project will give many opportunities in the community for teaching at all stages of the project - from construction to cultivation to processing of the tree fruits and products. The inclusion of the community at each stage of expanding the forest based economy will multiply the value of the Project many times.

There are two Community Forests near this chosen area that have a demand for valuable tree seedlings for their reforestation efforts. In addition, the privately held lands owned by the resident farmers in the area are over-utilized for firewood and fodder requirements and will also be targets for future sales and reforestation projects through TEAM Nepal.

Chandika Arboretum Project Update
​
The Chandika Arboretum Project is a reforestation initiative at a school in Nepal. The project enabled students to plant trees on the school premises and they got to take seedlings home to plant at their households. The project was successful in creating awareness about the importance of forest ecosystems, not only for the students at Chandika, but also the school management committee, parents, and teachers. We believe environmental education with hands on opportunities fosters future stewards of the land.
The project has been underway for over a year and we are pleased to report that the planted trees are doing well. Thank you for everyone participating and supporting this project! It means so much to members of the community.

Background
​
Nepal is a mere 0.1% of global land area, but possesses incredibly diverse biological resources and has a rich and unique cultural heritage. Forests provide a many resources for daily subsistence and income generation. Community forestry in Nepal has been a major success in improving the livelihoods of local communities in many parts of the country. A shortage of funds, inadequate training for local communities, rapid urbanization and lack of environmental awareness are all major hurdles in promoting community-based forest management in rural areas.

Recognizing the need to develop sustainable alternatives, Forests without Borders has developed projects in Nepal that focus on Forest and Environmental Education within Schools, particularly in remote areas of the country. We have developed pilot projects in schools in the mid-hills of Nepal and one in the lowland plains. Each project is aimed at establishing multi-purpose forest tree nurseries (composed of local tree species). Implementing these projects exposed many problems, for example, teachers are not familiar with developing a nursery or what an environmental club does. We are continuing to work with the schools to resolve these problems. To accentuate the need for restoring forest cover in Nepal, one of our school nurseries was destroyed by a landslide. Our objective is to help these nurseries become financially self-sufficient – a real challenge as the local people do not have any discretionary income.
